eSIM or roaming: which should you choose abroad?
A candid comparison of when a travel eSIM saves money and when the roaming in your French plan does the job.
On a trip beyond the EU, an eSIM is nearly always the cheaper and more adaptable choice compared with roaming. You only pay for the plan, you see the price beforehand and you are online at once. Inside the EU, the roaming built into your French plan often covers you, but look closely at how much data it allows.
The question of eSIM versus roaming comes up before almost every trip, and the answer hinges on where you are going. In the EU, "roam like at home" lets you use your French plan at no extra cost, usually with a reduced data allowance. Outside the EU (Turkey, the United States, Thailand, Switzerland), roaming through your French operator soon becomes very expensive, at times several euros per megabyte. A local eSIM is then the cheapest and most predictable option.
eSIM vs roaming at a glance
| Travel eSIM | Roaming (EU) | Roaming (outside EU) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Fixed-price plan | Included in your plan | Very costly (charged per MB or per day) |
| Activation | QR code, immediate | Automatic | Automatic |
| Budget control | Price known in advance | Good | Poor — bill shock possible |
| Data allowance | Your choice | Often limited | Expensive top-ups |
| French number | Kept (in parallel) | Kept | Kept |
| Recommendation | Ideal outside the EU | Short stays in the EU | Not recommended |
When to choose which?
Choose a travel eSIM if…
… you are going outside the EU (Turkey, the United States, Asia, Switzerland), consume a lot of data, or want your costs fixed beforehand. On a multi-country trip, a regional eSIM usually works out cheapest.
Roaming is enough if…
… your stay is brief and inside the EU, and your plan already includes enough data. Look up the "EU" data allowance before leaving, as it is often smaller than what you get at home.
